Lathyrus

Lathyrus (Sweet Pea) is a genus of annual and perennial herbs, found across Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and Australia, with about 150 species in total. It grows in climates ranging from temperate zones to tropical areas. The plant has a smooth, often branched stem that can be upright, sprawling, or climbing, reaching up to 4 meters in length. Sometimes the stem is square-shaped, and the leaves are alternate, usually with two leaflets measuring 2 to 4.5 cm long. Lathyrus boasts beautifully colored flowers. At our florist in Strašnice, we offer Lathyrus as an annual plant during the summer months.

Ecology and role in nature: Lathyrus thrives in a variety of climates, from temperate zones to tropical regions. It plays an important role in natural ecosystems, providing a food source for pollinators like bees and butterflies and contributing to biodiversity.

Interesting facts: Some species of Lathyrus, such as Lathyrus sativus, are edible and used as food or animal feed. Other species are prized for their ornamental value due to their bright, attractive flowers. Certain types of Lathyrus can also improve soil fertility by fixing nitrogen.

Use in floristry: Lathyrus is widely used in floristry for its vibrant flowers, which add a delicate and elegant touch to bouquets. Thanks to its climbing nature, it is often used in hanging arrangements or romantic floral designs.
