Caring for the poinsettia
If you want your poinsettia to look healthy and fresh during the festive season, you need to follow a few simple tips, keep the plant in bright sunlight and protect it from draughts. The soil should be kept moist at all times, but you should not overwater it or leave it in excessive amounts of water. Wait until the top layer of soil is dry to the touch before watering again. With proper care, poinsettia flowers can last for several months. Once the plant has flowered in the spring, you should cut back the stems and trim off the old leaves and flowers.
The poinsettia cactus
The poinsettia cactus is one of the most traditional plants we decorate our homes with at Christmas. It needs no special treatment to bloom in time. It is native to South America, originally from Brazil. The Christmas cactus is definitely an interesting plant, even when it is not in bloom. They have abundant branching flat-articulated stems with toothed edges, at the ends of which, with a little proper care, flower buds appear in late autumn and early winter. If you want your Christmas cactus to flower, place it in a cooler room where the temperature is preferably between 13 and 17 degrees Celsius. If the room temperature exceeds twenty-two degrees, the cactus will grow well but will not bloom.
The Christmas cactus needs more humid air and moderate watering from March to August; from September onwards, reduce watering until buds are set, then return to normal watering.
